Fragrance is a part of our daily life. It is found in perfumes, laundry detergents, room fresheners, soaps, deodorants. All of them contain some chemical compounds which are causing major health problems. However, the use of scents is not new in our life. It has been in our lifestyle since thousands of years. But the health problems due to the fragrance are comparatively new.
The main reason behind the increasing health problems due to fragrance is that in the ancient time perfumes/scents were made from the natural ingredients. But now the vast quantities of the scents are made from the chemicals like acetone, acetophenone, ethyl acetate to meet the increasing demands and off course due to its affordability. Making scents from chemicals are cheaper and less time consuming than extracting it from the natural resources.
Most of the chemicals used in making scents are petroleum products which are proved as one of the reason of increasing health hazards like birth disorders, disorders of nervous system and even disease like cancer. Chemicals can also lead to may allergic reactions on the skin. Those who have very sensitive skin are more vulnerable to have rashes, dermatitis, eczema, etc with the use of perfumes and other products that contain chemicals that is not agreeable to your skin. There are many people who are so hyper sensitive to certain perfumes that even the sniff can cause shortness of breath, rapid breathing, heart beat and many other reactions. Seven years ago, when Denise Faustman found that she had a cure for type-1 diabetes in mice, she was denied the opportunity to start clinical trials on humans by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Nor did she receive any support from pharma companies.
In 2003, Faustman successfully treated more mice with type-1, but her application was rejected again by the JDRF. However they did finance three rivals to test her theories. In March of 2006, these tests proved Faustman to be right; about 1/3 of the mice were cured.
Juvenile or type-1 diabetes is marked by the lack of insulin production by the pancreas, often due to immune cells erroneously destroying the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Without insulin breaking down ingested sugar, glucose mounts up in blood, so diabetics have to take injections to replace the insulin that the body is not generating, and keep on blood sugar levels. Diabetes can lead to many other problems like cardiac arrests, strokes, kidney failure and nerve damage that results in amputation.
Faustman produced her remarkable results by giving the animals Bacillus Calmette-Guerin or BCG. Used for over four decades as an anti-TB vaccine, Faustman found that BCG wipes out immune cells named killer T-cells. This prevents the immune system from consuming beta cells, and the latter restored themselves enough to create insulin to cure diabetes in the mice.

Recently there is a study on ASTHMA and according to the researchers at NIH, National Institute of Health has found further evidence to support the theory that allergy is a major.
Factor in Asthma
The study was conducted by researchers led by Darry C Zeldin and who are a senior investigator at the National Institute of Environment Health Sciences and Peter Gergen, M.D, M.P.H, of NIAID Division of Allergy Immunology and Transplantation.
Dr. Zeldin said that the new research showed that 56.3 percent of Asthma cases attributed to ATOPY, a condition that resulted from gene-environment interactions and can be measured by a positive skin test to allergies.
“It has long been debated whether people who develop Asthma have a genetic propensity to develop allergies, or atop .This new research shows that 56.3 percent of Asthma cases are attributed to atopy.”
Zeldin and his team pointed out that from the study it was found that CAT ALLERGY was one of the major causes for asthma.
“Sensitization to cat appears to be a strong risk factor for asthma in this study. We are not advocating parents get rid of pets, but if you suspect that you or your child might have cat allergies or get asthmatic-like symptoms, you should consult that exposure to cats, particularly early in life, may be a protective factor against with a physician about the best course of action for your family.” Zeldin said.
